Oliver is now a familiar face in many Toronto Jazz ensembles. As a single listening to Convergence makes clear, Oliver has synthesized his many influences into a coherent Jazz sound that is both reverential to his musical mentors and altogether sui generis. The respective talents of Oliver and his well-chosen side musicians have similarly converged on this mixed program of standards and Oliver originals for a result that captures the immediately identifiable sound that is good Jazz music. ©

The duo created by the Oleś brothers (Marcin - double bass and Bartłomiej - percussion) is an unusual phenomenon on the Polish jazz scene. For more than 10 years, this tandem has been an ideal rhythm section for countless projects, while functioning as an independent duo.
Album branded as Oleś Brothers & Christopher Dell is dedicated to the music of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki. Brothers along with the eminent German vibraphonist Christopher Dell, on the album "Górecki Ahead" present the music of the great composer in a completely new, jazz context. It is worth mentioning that with Dell Olesiów they have been cooperating for years, and among the jointly implemented projects, the CDs "Komeda Ahead" (2011) and "Fragments & Moments" (2012) should be mentioned.
The new joint venture is to face unique music, as the starting point was the themes selected from the works of one of the most important contemporary composers. The trio we listen to on the album once again proves the timelessness and universality of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's music. It is also another show of unprecedented creativity and instrumental skills of artists for whom Górecki's music is another opportunity for personal artistic expression.
Arranged and developed for three instruments by Marcin Oles, the compositions are a completely new look at compositions known for years, and at the same time music full of respect and respect for the composer's original idea. The cross-sectional program of the album includes both created in 1973 for the soprano, choir and mystical orchestra "Ad Matrem" ("For Mother"), and composed in 1990, full of regret and sadness, "Good Night", originally created for soprano, alto flute, piano and 3 dams there.
Distinct from each other both temporally and in terms of context topics, combines a common language developed by three musicians, full of colors and various ornaments.
The impression is impressive that each of the 11 themes on the album was created for the jazz trio, which of course is not true. The new language for which Górecki's works have been transposed reveals vast deposits, previously unknown values in the music of the composer.

Marcin Oles - double bass
Bart Oles - drums
Christopher Dell - vibraphone

This band came together and felt immediately comfortable with that new exciting energy but still familiar.

I've been making music with Mark for over 12 years, and he's become like my New Jersey older brother who gives great advice and is deeply warm but will rib you when necessary. He's a master musician who is constantly evolving and growing, and it's been inspirational to play together in a number of different settings.

Hamin Honari and I have played music for over 15 years. We've grown together and I've seen him develop into an amazing, versatile, well-rounded, masterful musician. Right from the beginning he always had soul and it speaks no matter what he is playing.

Hank and I met just a few years ago but it feels like I've known him for a long time too. That may be because he is so warm and inviting as a human being, but it might also be because I've been listening to him play since I was in high school through his work with Bill Frisell, as well as at 1067, Vancouver's long-gone artist-run space where I learned to play free music. His collective with Tim Berne and Joey Baron, Miniature, was a constant in their CD player, the intro and intermission of each concert.

This band feels like it's been in the works for a long time and that it marks the culmination of my development on the oud. I feel connected to the tradition but am using the instrument to speak my own language. I'm extremely excited about this music and honoured that these musicians are playing with me. I hope you enjoy it.

Einstein's quote suggests that beauty alone can be empty, but that the added element of mystery is what communicates depth and drama. With this in mind, acclaimed New York-based pianist Lewis Porter has composed and arranged the ten tracks included in his new album 'Beauty & Mystery', which was recorded with John Patitucci on double bass and Terri Lyne Carrington on drums. Saxophonist Tia Fuller (courtesy of Mack Avenue Records) is featured on two tracks.

This album will mark the first time that Carrington and Patitucci have a recorded a full album of straight ahead acoustic jazz together. They are old friends and have recorded tracks on a variety of albums, but nobody has ever heard the amazing work they can do on a program of straight ahead and standard tunes.

Lewis Porter, PhD, is the jazz professor at the Rutgers campus in Newark. He has performed on piano across the USA and Europe with Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Gary Bartz, Wycliffe Gordon, Ravi Coltrane, Marc Ribot, and many others, and has recorded with Liebman, Ribot, Bartz, etc. He received a Grammy nomination in 1995. He appears on 23 albums as a co-leader or sideman and has recorded 4 albums as a bandleader, three of which for Altrisuoni.

Terri Lyne Carrington is a Grammy award-winning drummer, composer and bandleader. After an extensive touring career of over 20 years with luminaries like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Al Jarreau, Stan Getz, David Sanborn, Joe Sample, Cassandra Wilson, Clark Terry, Dianne Reeves and more, she returned to her hometown in Massachusetts, where she was appointed professor at her alma mater, Berklee College of Music, receiving also an honorary doctorate in 2003.

John Patitucci is a two-time Grammy award-winning jazz bass player and composer, with a very long list of collaborations as a studio musician, live performer, and bandleader. His association with Chick Corea, from 1985, has brought him worldwide acclaim and put him at the forefront of the global jazz scene.

Tia Fuller is a saxophonist, composer, and educator, and a member of the all-female band touring with Beyoncé. Fuller is currently a faculty member in the ensembles department at Berklee College of Music. Fuller has regularly performed with a number of jazz artists, including Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ralph Peterson Septet, the T.S. Monk Septet, the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, the Rufus Reid Septet, the Sean Jones Quintet and the Nancy Wilson Jazz Orchestra.

The world is remarkable in that people from far off places and different walks of life can have an immediate, dramatic impact on each other after meeting just once. The notion of meeting a newcomer who embraces new people and ideas but also freely puts forth his own ideas is the theme of guitarist Davy Mooney and drummer Ko Omura’s new recording, Benign Strangers. Originally from New Orleans, Mooney is a longtime regular on the New York scene and, for the past year, he has been teaching at his alma mater, the University of North Texas in Denton. Mooney’s two Sunnyside releases, Perrier Street and Hope of Home, highlight his fantastic playing and composing with an incredible cast of musicians graced with the New Orleans magic, including saxophonist John Ellis, pianist Jon Cowherd and drummer Brian Blade.

Intrigued by the culture after his first visit in 2008, Mooney has been a regular visitor to Japan. After the 2012 release of Perrier Street, he reached out to a Japan based UNT friend for help getting a tour and ensemble together. It was then that Mooney met Ko Omura.

Omura was born in Tokyo but grew up in the United States and Australia. After graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and a stint in Sydney, Omura returned to Tokyo where he has made his name as a top-notch drummer and organizer and influencer in the local scene.

Mooney returned to Japan to tour over the next two years. The initial tours mainly featured Mooney’s pieces but a fluid dynamic was enforced as Omura’s influence began to shape the sound of the collaboration by introducing his own music into the touring ensembles. Mooney and Omura’s composing styles are well suited, as they both are melodists of high degree. It wasn’t long before the duo began making plans for further endeavors, including a recording.

During the brutal cold of January 2018, Mooney and Omura met in New York City to record with a small ensemble. It was a warm, reunion-like atmosphere in the studio, as Mooney had long friendships with all involved. But apart from pianist Glenn Zaleski, it was the first time Omura had met the assembled cast, which included John Ellis, bassist Matt Clohesy and engineer Michael Perez-Cisneros.

The recording was a true collaboration with Mooney and Omura both providing compositions, which were finely tuned in the studio. The resulting recording is a stirring collection of original pieces that prove that jazz is a language that spans the globe.

The recording begins with Omura’s sweeping “Benign Strangers,” an homage to individuals, now friends, from all over the globe who have helped him along his musical path. Mooney’s “In This Balance of Time” is a beauty with interesting form and shifting meters, while his “Dim” is an intriguing experiment with the diminished chords. Omura’s “Subconscious Partner” is a breezy tune that shares gratitude to the inner voice that pushes us on our way. Omura has traveled to India to study the tabla over the past four years and his talent on the twin drums is evident on his “Unimagined Virtues,” which is performed in a trio with Mooney and Ellis.

Named for a street sign he sees on his way to work each day, Mooney’s “Shady Shores” is a bright and inspiring piece, which features solos from Zaleski and Mooney. The title for Omura’s quietly stoic “Hiraeth” comes from a Welsh word meaning nostalgia or longing and provides a perfect vehicle for Clohesy’s bass feature. Mooney’s angular “Polly Pulse” is a tricky, polyrhythmic piece and a departure from the guitarist’s usual compositional style. “The Heights” is another from Mooney’s book that shows his talent at writing catchy material in service to improvisation. The recording concludes with Omura’s “29th Road,” a lilting composition named for a street in a Mumbai suburb that had a spiritual feel and the most jovial stray dogs on the planet.

Bright things can happen when worlds collide. Two individuals of diverse backgrounds can come together to create beautiful music, as is the case with Davy Mooney and Ko Omura on their lovely new Benign Strangers.

Fantastic work from Israeli saxophonist Daniel Zamir – one of the most popular jazz musicians in his home nation, and an incredibly spiritual force who just seems to get more and more powerful every time he hits the recording studio! This live performance is wonderful – with Zamir stretching out on soprano sax in these really long, beautifully-crafted lines – full of joy and spirit, and with a unique voice that could well make him one of the more important global reed talents in years to come!
You might know Zamir from his early work with John Zorn, during a period when he was living in New York – but in the decade since he's returned to his homeland, his sound has gotten infinitely stronger, and really reaches a new height on this album – which mostly features Daniel in an instrumental mode, but also features a few surprising vocal performances as well. The tracks often have a modal energy that's perfect for the soprano sax – and titles include "The Five Levels Of The Soul", "Fifty Four", "Hatikvah", "Tithanei Elai", "Shir Hashomer", "Tzama Lecha Nafshee", and "Shir Gaagua Lekhan". © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Belgian saxophonist Nicolas Kummert has been influenced by African music since a two month stay in Senegal at the age of 17, where he collaborated with musicians from that country and later from Benin, Mali, Kenya, Sao Tomé, Morocco and Tunisia. He met award-winning Blue Note guitarist Lionel Loueke during a recording session for Beninese singer Patrick Ruffino in 2008 and by 2015 Kummert had asked Loueke to join his new band. His previous album Voices (2014), featured Senegalese guitarist Hervé Sambe. Another recent recording was 2015's Flow with a quartet going by the name of Drifter, which he co-led with the Finnish pianist Alexi Tuomarila.

Whilst Kummert's carefully crafted compositions and serpentine saxophone lines are absolutely key to La Diversité it's Loueke's subtle contributions which propel it to the next level. Whilst Loueke has a proclivity for understatement in a similar vein to Bill Frisell, he is equally capable of delivering more raucous expositions such as heard on the rocky "We'll Be Alright," immediately countered by its diametrically opposite acoustic version, "And What If We're Not." Loueke seamlessly moves from electric to acoustic guitar, employing bell like harmonics on "Le Vent Se Lève" and gentle finger picking on "Le Peuple De L'Arc-En-Ciel."

As a duo, evidenced by the Eric Satie-based "Gnossienne A Deux," Kummert and Loueke recall the near-magical teamwork of Jimmy Giuffre and Jim Hall. The poignancy of two versions of Leonard Cohen's hit song "Hallelujah" (and an acoustic "Hallelujah Again") played respectively by the quartet and duo, is emphasised by the typically delicate treatment afforded the pieces. From the West African staccato feel of "Rainbow People" to the languid sultriness of "Diversity Over Purity" this album is mesmeric and innovative, replete with fresh ideas and sounds. ~ review By ROGER FARBEY

January 19, 2018 "NOTES AND WORDS" will be released, the latest project by LETIZIA HONORED, a young and talented jazz singer from Lecce, with his second recording experience. Author or co-author of almost all the texts, now Letizia presents herself for the first time as a composer. The 9 unpublished songs are composed and arranged by Paolo Di Sabatino (his also the reworking of the 3 standards that complete the work), a true "director" of the work done.

the presence of Flavio Boltro on the trumpet, Max Ionata on sax, Giovanna Famulari on cello, Daniele Mencarelli on electric bass and contrabass, Glauco Di Sabatino on drums and Bruno Marcozzi on percussion. The well-known New York crooner Sachal Vasandani is a special guest.

"This record is me, it represents me totally - says Letizia - the thousand facets of a strobosphere that moves and tries to illuminate everything. The driving force is music without which there would be nothing. The music that makes you grow, that makes you mature and makes you understand day by day who you really are. The music that lifts you when you fall, that builds you when you feel shattered and makes you suffer the pain. Music that amplifies joy, which regulates the rhythm of your breathing and accompanies the heart's pulsations. With this record I can travel inside myself but I can tell, to the listener, every stage of the journey ».

Letizia Onorati is a singer from Lecce, born in 1992. Her passion for music began as a child and at the age of eight she began to study singing with the teacher Elisabetta Guido. She has studied over the years with important exponents of the national and international jazz scene such as Roberta Gambarini, Rachel Gould, Mark Sherman, Jerry Bergonzi, Francesco Petreni, Maria Laura Bigliazzi, Mauro Campobasso, Fabrizia Barresi, Bob Stoloff who chooses her for a scholarship and Paolo Di Sabatino became his pianist, arranger and artistic producer. She was a soloist of the gospel choir "A. M. Family "and participated in the project" Le sacrè en musique "conceived by Elisabetta Guido and the international dance manager Sofia Capestro. He has collaborated with Flavio Boltro, Giovanna Famulari, Max Ionata, Mirko Signorile, Sachal Vasandani, Barbara Errico (Italian Jazz Awards 2011), Tia Architto and Sergio Corbini (Siena Jazz pianist). From May 2015 he started a specialization course with the "lady" of jazz Tiziana Ghiglioni.

Produced by Steve Tyrell.

Sanitize Tom Waits’s vocal cords, take some of the rasp out of Dr. John’s, put some muscle into Bobby Caldwell’s, combine them and you’ll have an approximation of the quality of Steve Tyrell’s voice. Like his popular 1999 debut, “A New Standard”, this is a meticulously recorded album featuring the great American songbook and some of the best jazz soloists alive, including trumpeter Clark Terry, harmonica player Toots Thielemans, and singer Jane Monheit, who plays Lucille Ball and Betty Carter against Tyrell’s Red Skelton and Ray Charles on the classic duet “Baby It’s Cold Outside”.
Tyrell complements each of his partners with the kind of empathy that makes them shine as bright as his irresistible voice. Plas Johnson’s saxophone take on “That Old Feeling,” for instance, is highly reminiscent of the symbiotic musical partnership that Lester Young created with Billie Holiday more than half a century ago. Also like his first record, it is the creative arrangements of guitarist Bob Mann and pianist Joe Sample that make these 16 tracks work so well.
