The ‘MJQ Celebration’ was a well known and celebrated ensemble of UK musicians, active from 2009-2016. Formed by pianist and composer Michael Garrick MBE, the band celebrated one of the most famous and influential jazz ensembles of all time, the ‘Modern Jazz Quartet’.

After enjoying a number of exceptionally well received concerts with Garrick at the helm, the group survived Garrick’s untimely death in 2011 by recruiting the fine young pianist Barry Green. In this format, the group toured the UK and played sell out shows at prestigious venues such as the Purcell Room and Ronnie Scott’s.

In 2013, the band cut their eponymous album. Stellar favourites such as ‘Django’, ‘The Golden Striker’, ‘Bag’s Groove’ and ‘Concorde’ were given enthralling new renditions, whilst staying true to the original intentions of their composers John Lewis and Milt Jackson.

The group also paid homage to their founder Michael Garrick, by including two of his original compositions, hand-picked by his bass player of choice, Matt Ridley. Teaming up for the session with stalwart UK saxophonist Dave O’Higgins, the ensemble also doff their cap to the collaboration between Sonny Rollins and the MJQ, featuring a rip-roaring version of ‘The Stopper’, as well as the more moderate (but no less compelling) ‘No Moe’ and ‘Scoops’.

Released in April 2014, the album gained universal praise from critics and audiences alike. Cut entirely live in one day, with no fixes or overdubs, the album bears a freshness and excitement that not only champions the original MJQ, but also serves as an example of world-class jazz coming from the UK.

Recorded at International Sound Studio, Conversano Bari in December 2011.

Released: Jun 2017

The new album by saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano, entitled "Change The World", will capture you from the first listen. The album is a journey between some rock classics and the American and British singer-songwriters scene, the only detour is the transcription of the "Luiza" Jobiniana pearl, while the other jewels are masterpieces by Joni Mitchell, Roger Waters, Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Lennon and McCartney ... This project was born after the tour with the show "The Nights Of Attorney Guerrieri" and resumed later by Ottaviano and the Pinturas following up those suggestions, adding other themes already present in their repertoire giving birth to this sparkling work. The songs are performed by a star formation all over Puglia.

Houston Person - Rain Or Shine (2017)

3. Everything Must Change
4. Learnin' the Blues
5. I Wonder Where Our Love Has Gone
6. Soupbone
7. Never Let Me Go
8. Our Day Will Come
9. Danny Boy

Personnel: Houston Person: tenor saxophone; Warren Vache: cornet (1, 2, 4, 6, 8); Lafayette Harris: piano; Rodney Jones: guitar (1-6, 8, 9); Matthew Parrish: bass; Vincent Ector: drums.
Tenor saxophonist Houston Person, now in his eightieth decade, has made no concessions to Father Time, choosing instead to use his many years in the jazz trenches to forge a style all his own, bathed in blues and soul but never turning a deaf ear to the allure of a seductive and tasteful melody. Each of these components is clear as the midday sun on Rain or Shine, a well designed studio session on which Person shares the front line with the like-minded cornetist Warren Vache. There can be no doubting a leader's self-confidence when he not only opens his own gig with an even-tempered ballad ("Come Rain or Come Shine") but entrusts the tune's lone solo to his fellow horn man. That is exactly what Person does, unlimbering his keen improvisational chops on the next track, "132nd and Madison," and pretty much taking the reins from there on. That's not meant to imply that Vache doesn't have his moments he fashions engaging solos whenever called upon, as do guitarist Rodney Jones and pianist Lafayette Harris who with bassist Matthew Parrish and drummer Vincent Ector comprise the ensemble's deft and responsive rhythm section.

Besides the songs already mentioned, the bill of fare embodies a mixture of soul, funk, R&B and ballads, with the blues never more than a glance away, before closing with an eloquent reading of the Irish folk classic, "Danny Boy" (by Person and Harris). Jones wrote the funky "Soupbone," which precedes the ballad "Never Let Me Go" and "Our Day Will Come" (set to a bossa beat) and follows "Everything Must Change," "I Wonder Where Our Love Has Gone" and the Frank Sinatra favorite, "Learnin' the Blues" (which swings as hard and as freely as Ol' Blue Eyes' original to amplify snappy solos by Person, Vache, Jones, Harris and Parrish). Rain or Shine was recorded in June 2017, one month before the passing of producer Joe Fields who founded the Muse and Xanadu labels, among others, before co-founding HighNote and Savant Records with his son Barney in 1996. If this was the last recording that Fields produced, he did indeed end his lengthy career on a decisive HighNote. ~ Jack Bowers

He states that although his father plays drums, he has never actually seen him play. As a teenager, he was exposed to jazz legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane when listening to music with his father. Chris Dave blossomed on the drums, eventually graduating from Houston’s prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

He studied at Howard University in Washington D.C. where he met acclaimed producers and former Prince associates Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Through this relationship, Chris Dave’s professional career began as he started working with R&B band Mint Condition.

Billy Hart’s cymbal crash at the beginning of “Route F” is a wake-up call as much as an invitation to be mesmerized, hypnotized, spell-bound in a perfectly balanced triangle of musical gravity and motion. Billy Hart is the master sorcerer, sometimes playful, sometimes fierce, but always pulling, driving—one feels that his every hit is entirely his own, radiating body and soul of a living legend, of the history of jazz itself.
Listening to this trio’s music brings up images of being led into an enchanted forest—all three musicians are woodsmen, bound together by purpose and hard-earned mastery; calloused hands holding on to a thick rope—song— as not to lose one another even after dark. There is a deeply-felt honesty and absence of any artifice—there is just expression of a life force greater than anything else. ~ Alessandro Ricciarelli

Adam Kolker - tenor sax (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet on "Beautiful You")
Steve Cardenas - guitar
Billy Mintz - drums
Lawrence Feldman - flute, alto flute
David Gould - clarinet, bass clarinet
Jackie Henderson - bassoon

Adam Kolker is a contrarian. In a world of tenor saxophone players who shout, he often whispers. His measured voice and the purity of his tenor sound do not detract from his relevance and modernity. In fact, his relative quietude makes it easier to perceive the freshness of his ideas about lyricism.

Beckon is not so much a departure for Kolker as it is the furthest logical extension to date of his established musical direction. It is his most intellectual, most ethereal, most soulful album. It is closer to a jazz/classical “Third Stream” than anything he has done before. (Critics wrote off “Third Stream” music a half-century ago, but in fact it is a flourishing jazz genre, even if no one dares call it by its name.)

Kolker plays all the single-reed instruments, and on an earlier recording (2008’s Flag Day) he overdubbed himself on flutes and clarinets and created a background woodwind choir. On Beckon, on three tracks, he supplements his core trio (guitarist Steve Cardenas, drummer Billy Mintz) with an actual live woodwind section (Lawrence Feldman, flutes; David Gould, clarinets; Jackie Henderson, bassoon).

Kolker’s compositions for expanded ensemble are as formal and meticulous as fugues. “Slow Dance” is an enigmatic three-note motif, obsessively repeated by the woodwinds. Major and minor tonalities become depths of haunting harmony, from which Kolker’s veering jazz solo emerges. “Cycles” is advanced chamber jazz, but its precise execution of complexity is secondary to rich reed sonorities and Kolker’s surges of feeling made into spontaneous melody. On the title track, the woodwinds flow all around Kolker and Cardenas, who, individually and together, offer stimulating abstractions that eventually link to the song.

One complaint: Kolker is a special interpreter of standards. There should have been more than one. “I Wish I Knew,” loosely, dreamily sketched, is sublime. - By Thomas Conrad

Childhood memories is the first Cd recorded by the Eduardo Blanco International Quartet. Childhood Memories pictures the musical life of Eduardo Blanco in seven tunes consisting of five original compositions by Eduardo and two standards.

About the Quartet:
Every musician has his dreams. A lot of those dreams are about having all harmonic and instrumental skills or playing with famous musicians that often are our great heroes. When a musician gets matured, a good sound is the thing we dream of and that will get more important through the years. With bringing the International Quartet together Eduardo Blanco makes some of his dreams come through! Says Eduardo: “For me, a good jazz band plays with intensity but without the use of excessive volume, has a proper use of dynamics, shows respect for the rich jazz tradition and performs with a high sense of groove. This quartet has that all and adds a fresh approach on top of that. For me, this is a dream band”.

Label - Blue Note
Blue Note's So Blue, So Funky, Vol. 1 is a 12-track compilation that highlights the funkiest soul-jazz organists that recorded for the label, whether it was a leader or as a sideman. Although there's a handful of cuts from the early '60s, such as "Face to Face" by the terrific, underrated Baby Face Willette, the compilation leans toward the funky fusions of the late '60s, such as Big John Patton's "Fat Judy," Lou Donaldson's "Everything I Do Is Gon' Be Funky (From Now On)," Jack McDuff's "Butter for Yo' Popcorn" and Grant Green's "Ain't It Funky Now." The best thing about this comp is that even though it has familiar names, not all of the material is readily available on CD, which makes it of interest to casual groove fans and serious collectors alike. ©

Richie started playing alto saxophone when he was 10 years old in his home town of Trenton, New Jersey. Influenced by Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker, Cole’s talent and dedication won him a full scholarship from Downbeat Magazine to the Berklee School of Music in Boston.

His professional career began in 1969 when he joined the Buddy Rich Big Band. And after stints with the Lionel Hampton Big Band and the Doc Severinsen Big Band, Cole formed his own quintet and toured worldwide, doing a great deal to popularize bebop and his own “Alto Madness” style in the 70’s and early 80’s.

Cole has performed and recorded with the great vocalese artist Eddie Jefferson, the Manhattan Transfer, Bobby Enriquez, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Stitt, Art Pepper, Tom Waits, Boots Randolph, and Nancy Wilson, to name just a few of his musical collaborations. Tom Richter - bass
Leon Saleh - drums

A constant oscillation between the extremes. This could be a short and precise definition of the young jazz group „Raphael Käfer´s Tyranno Saurus Jazz“. Mostly being active in the areas of postbop and modern jazz, the young musicians also try to integrate components of other musical styles such as classical music. Affected by melancholic sounds to the point of aggressive and wild sections, the musicians always play with dynamics to create an outstanding musical intensity. In spite of the huge variety in the compositions’ mood and tempo, the musicians always keep hold of their own sound and musical style.

Album-release of „Meinberg/Meyer/Oberbeck“ and features New York based saxophonist Chris Cheek. No separated rooms, no headphones, only one microphone per instrument. Pure and honest, no cuts, no adjustments - in this music is everything real. The use of vintage microphones, partly 60 years old, makes the album sound very direct and warm. There is a very organic pressure, which can often be recognized on old masters recordings. „The Hiker“ does not sound like perfect virtuosity, but one can hear the intimacy and devotion of improvising musicians.

Edizioni Musicali e Discografiche Notami
Musical Editions Notami have the pleasure to announce the last release of the label Notami Jazz already available on-line and distributed by IRD, the highly anticipated new album of Marco Postacchini from the title, OLD STUFF, NEW BOX. Postacchini signature 5 of the 10 tracks on the album, including the title track, placed in the opening as well as a statement of intent and, at the same time, a tribute to the famous disc of Gil Evans 1958 New bottle, old wine. The disc reveals from the outset his soul is a composite one, made up of south american rhythms and flashes of energetic, evident in the Not for lovers and Now''s the time to run, but also of the complexity of the harmonic and alternating sections contrasting, as in the Eternal puzzle and Illogical moon. Added to this is the arrangement on two songs Zeppetella, Cheerful and Reunion, and two Ada Montellanico, when and You I will dream anyway. The latter, in particular, with a text written by Luigi Tenco, which remained unpublished until 2008, when the Ada Montellanico had put it in the music on his album “Sound of a woman”. The work of arrangement of the articulated has been made in the track chosen as the epilogue, which recalls a famous pop song in sanremo, apparently far from the sound of the jazz, the sun and azure written by Matteo Saggese and Mino Vergnaghi and performed by Giorgia. In “Old stuff, new box”, they are exploited to the extreme the possibilities of the octet, formed by Simone La Maida, Massimo Morganti, Davide Ghidoni, Samuele Garofoli, Alessandro Paternesi, Emanuele Evangelista and Gabriele Pesaresi. Postacchini, in fact, explore with the musicians in the great tradition of writing for small group, which from the beginning has been the anteroom of a writing that is more complex, such as that used for the broad training of the big band. Each tool, therefore, becomes an elementary particle, from which springs a rich language and compact. Postacchini move the jazz from its definitions in the usual, revisited in an unexpected way, the sound of the composers of the latest generation.

Tilting Axis describes the inclination of the rotation of a celestial body. Similar to the one of the earth which causes the four seasons, the tilting inclination of the music offers a special drive. On its new album, the band klapparat balances on a fine axis between the aesthetics of traditional jazz and a new sound galaxy.

By far Brown's best contemporary effort (and the set that really got his recording career back in high gear). Cameos by Dr. John and Ruth Brown certainly didn't hurt the set's chances, but it's the eternally suave pianist and his excellent road band (especially guitarist Danny Caron and saxist Clifford Solomon) that make this such a delightful collection.

Benita Haastrup, drums & percussion
Kaare Munkholm, vibraphone
Jens Skou Olsen, bass

This trio plays music from the heart and finds its rhythmic and poetic power in the many moods, sounds and dynamics that bind us together as human beings. The musical universe of this trio is in constant development and expansion and is inspired by more than 30 years of artistic creation at festivals, in venues and studios around the world – and evey single concert and recording adds new chapters to this journey!

For more than three years now, I have had the great fortune of working with two of Denmark most brilliant jazz musicians and improvisers: Kaare Munkholm on vibraphone and Jens Skou Olsen on doublebbass.

Together the trio has toured extensively in Norway and Denmark – more than three monts on the road each year! – and this has made the trio one of the most tight units ever. The new trio release GOING NORTH coming up this fall showcases this music inspired by the wast nature and people of the high North – 2017 will be another year focusing on this trio…! Here is a short presentation of the members of the trio:

Jens Skou Olsen
Jens plays violoncello and doublebass and has laid down the steady, deep bass floor in every music conceivable – playing, touring and recording with among others Bob Moses, Lee Konitz, Chris Cheek, John Tchicai, Horace Parlan, Marilyn Mazur, Marie Bergman, David Murray, Etta Cameron, Kenny Drew, Harry Beckett, Gregory Hutchinson, Finn Ziegler, Andy Sheppard, Muhal Richard Abrahms, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Hank Jones. Jens is also a writer and P.hd. from Roskilde University.

Benita Haastrup
Benita Haastrup, drums & percussion – is formally trained at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory 1992. She has received the Ben Webster Prize 1998, The Sunset Jazz Hornbaek Prize 2007 for “an outstanding effort in Danish Jazz as a drummer, percussionist and composer”. Finally Benita was awarded a Danish Music Award 2012. Benita has played everything from swing to avant garde, african drum music, classical music, soul, folk, latin…and her creative and colorful drumming is inspired by all creative expressions in our world culture.

Kaare Munkholm
Kaare is one of Denmark’s busiest vibraphonists – he plays with a wide range of Danish and international artists and bands such as Tango orkestret, Gustav Ljunggren, Emil de Waal and Afengin. Kaare is a virtuoso, he is an inspired, innovative and very versatile artist and he always adds new dimensions to the music – vitality, beauty and sharp rhythmic landscapes. He graduated from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen 1992.

Joel Karlsson - bass clarinet, tenor saxophone
It has been an eventful year for Amanda Ginsburg. The label Ladybird quickly got up her eyes for her and a first single ”Havsmelodi", was released in the spring of 2017. After having been nominated for Newcomer of the Year by the P2 Jazzkatten she came in the fall (2017) out with yet another single, ”the Escape from everyday life” which was attended by Nils Landgren. On 2 February 2018 released her debut album ”I've been thinking about a thing”.
”I let my music flourish in the nordic melankolins tonality. Where I want to carefully manage the legacy of some of the most beloved names in american jazz and show. The music honors the tradition but takes it into contemporary times with the angles a 90-talist discovers in oneself and others.”  Amanda Ginsburg

Thilo Wolf's Big Band Shout, we are informed in the booklet, was "recorded live . . . on the occasion of taping the television production SWING IT, the only plausible response to which is "wow! One simply can't imagine a television program of this caliber on any outlet—network, cable or public—here in the States. This is for the most part the sort of uncompromising big-band jazz that hasn't graced TV screens in these parts for too many years (read: decades). And judging from the response, the German audience is clearly elated, even before Wolf welcomes his special guests: trumpeter Ray Anthony and blues/gospel singer Joan Faulkner and her backup group, the Expressions.

After four instrumentals including Cole Porter's "Easy To Love and Lester Young's "Tickletoe, Anthony, an octogenarian who has been making beautiful music for more than seventy years (and still has decent chops), enters with his signature theme, "Man With A Horn. He's front and center again on "All Of Me, "Tenderly, "It Had To Be You, "Mr. Anthony's Boogie and the strapping finale, Count Basie's venerable "One O'Clock Jump. Faulkner's showpieces include "He's Got The Whole World, "Ain't Misbehavin', "Let The Good Times Roll and "Amazing Grace. The power-laden band is beyond reproach, as are soloists Wolf, Axel Kühn, Lennart Axelsson, Norbert Nagel, Otto Staniloi, Werner Tauber and Thomas Zoller. It's a shame one has to be in Germany to see and hear music as admirable as this on television, but at least the CD is here to offer some solace. ~ Jack Bowers

Recorded & mixed by Reed Ruddy at Studio X,
Seattle WA, November 19-24, 2009

Jeff Baker, one of the best male jazz vocalists around today, is also the vocal director at ArtsWest School for Performing Arts in Eagle, Idaho. Working with high school age performers must be a gas, because Baker has produced a very engaging vocal jazz outing, featuring his students backed by an Origin Records all-star band, with pianist Justin Nielsen sitting in the piano/arranger's chair.

Redefinition takes a batch of familiar jazz tunes by the likes of George Gershwin, Henry Mancini, and Rodgers and Hart, and mixes in some popular songs from Prince, Joni Mitchell and Coldplay, with one traditional spiritual thrown in for good measure, and redefines them; bending their shapes a bit and giving them fresh spins. Under the guidance of polished professionals Baker and Nielsen, and backed by a roster of versatile top level musicians, the set holds up so well that the ages of the singers becomes simply a matter of interest. There is not a half-baked or tentative performance on the set; these young people sing with an uncluttered purity of feeling and remarkable confidence.

The Gershwins' "My Man's Gone Now" opens the set. Nielsen's piano sparkles, while Brent Jensen blows a sinewy soprano sax accompaniment to Camille Avery's heartfelt vocal, as the singer tells her story with feeling and a genuine sense of loss, giving way to John McLean's searing guitar. The songs are old familiar tales, leaning on the love or love lost theme. LeAnne Robinson gets deep into a beautiful, weary blues feeling on "You Don't Know What Love Is," while Georgia Sedlack soars in a buoyant take of Mancini's "Moon River." Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" (a Miles Davis favorite) is slowed down to a dirge, with a spare arrangement complimenting Cari Stevens' very direct and seemingly world-weary singing. The band brings in a funk feel on Prince's "Nothing Compares," with Fara Sumbureru bouncing into a light groove. "Much Farther to Go," a Rosie Thomas tune, features a Karmen Wolf's pure-toned, horn-like delivery. Harris Long—the lone male solo vocalist on the disc—possesses a rich baritone similar to Kurt Elling, and gives a fitting reverence to the traditional "City Called Heaven." Coldplay's "Sparks" closes the disc on a modern-leaning note. Mary Thompson's vocal exudes a melancholy, drifting-into-the-twilight mood. As the tune winds down she is joined by the choir—the other soloists plus Michael Wood, Sekayi Sumbureru and Andrew Koba—for a classy, collaborative ending to Redefinition, a fine set of jazz vocal tunes that introduce a bunch of amazing young talent. ~ Dan McClenaghan

Jet Lemon Band was born in 2014. It is an incredible combination of two Russians (Jim Aviva - lead vocal and keyboards, and Sammy Lukas - piano, saxophone back vocal), two Germans- (Benjamin Schlothauer - bass, and Jakob Kufert - drums) and South Koreans Ju Young Cheong - guitars. The initial idea was to cover songs of the great rock bands of the '70s but the inspiration morphed into a desire to honour just one legendary group LED ZEPPELIN II, recreating the genius of this band in the style of jazz The band welcomes the opportunity to combine two very different kinds of music — jazz and rock into one cohesive album and to capture the imagination of both fan bases.
