Opus 5's third studio album, 2014's Progression, finds the Criss Cross label supergroup delivering more of their sophisticated post-bop sound. As on past albums, Progression features the talents of saxophonist Seamus Blake, trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, pianist David Kikoski, bassist Boris Kozlov, and drummer Donald Edwards. A collaborative ensemble, each member of Opus 5 contributes an arrangement here which helps raise the bar from a simple blowing session to a distinct, group-oriented aesthetic, which is not to say there isn't a fair share of harmonically advanced, intensely swinging playing on display. On the contrary, cuts like the lithe album-opener "Snow Bird," the lilting, 3/4 number "Fear of Roaming," and the soulful swing-funk track "Walk a Waltz," are urbane, highly engaging numbers that bring to mind '70s-era Woody Shaw and Joe Henderson. Much more than a label-based ensemble, Opus 5 are one of the best contemporary post-bop groups of their time and Progression is simply further evidence of that conclusion.

Recorded In New York And Hollywood,January 15 & March 28,2001.
String Arrangements By Johnny Mandel(# 1,2),Dori Caymmi(# 5,6,8,9),Alan Broadbent(# 3,4,7).

Guitarist Russ Malone got his breaks backing crooners Harry Connick and Diana Krall, but with his mellow Georgia style and slow-smoked grooves, he's well on his way to a solo career. This all-ballad date is built around a sumptuous and hallowed string orchestra with more-than-capable arrangers at the helm: pianist Alan Broadbent, guitarist Dori Caymmi, and composer Johnny Mandel. With virtually every tune taken at a somnolent tempo, the date becomes more the moody sleeper than it need have been, despite Malone's occasional deft double-timing ("Wind in the Willow") and soaring ("Why Try to Change Me Now?"). A feather-light rhythm trio "features" veteran sideman Kenny Barron, whose piano barely peeks into the limelight. Established young groovemeisters Christian McBride (tip-toeing in baby elephant shoes), and Jeff "Tain" Watts (brushes only!) don't merely coast, but tip their knowing hands into nudging along rare old standards like Irving Berlin's "How About Me" and David Raksin's "The Bad and the Beautiful." Hearing Malone caressing the late Milt Jackson's title ballad may well draw similarities with Joe Pass's stunning technical wizardry and George Benson's deep-blue silk. We wouldn't be surprised (but might be delighted) to hear Russ unveil his own mellifluous baritone here and there on some date soon. Heartstrings might score points as a classic "make-out" album à la Johnny Mathis, except perhaps when Malone's deeply devotional side emerges on a final familiar hymn ("What a Friend We Have in Jesus").

Steele has a long association with The Pearl fishers since he appeared as a studio musician on many of their albums. Steele: "I'd played on many sessions with The Pearl fishers before, and have a similar taste in music with David Scott, with our shared love of Burt Bacharach, Beatles and Beach Boys. I was impressed by the depth of the beautiful melodies and could immediately hear my own voice playing these melodies - specifically using the 'Miles Davis sound' of the Harmon mute." The results are simply gorgeous. The album kick-starts with the joyous blast of "The Bluebells" - a song that originally appeared on the Pearl fishers album "Up With The Larks". Colin Steele makes it swing and rise just beautifully. His warm, melodic playing and tone is also a perfect match for the wonderful "Everything Works Out", one of Scott's most enduring songs. "The Vampires Of Camelon" rides on a great piano riff reminiscent of Vince Guaraldi - brilliantly played by Dave Milligan, Steele's long-time collaborator, who also arranged the album. Quite fabulously so.

Doug Webb, tenor, stritch, soprano sax

Putter Smith, bass
Paul Kreibich, drums
Doug Webb's newly released Sets The Standard is a textbook case of individual resourcefulness and group consonance in the context of songs often associated with the jazz tradition. For the most part, Webb, who plays tenor, stritch, and soprano sax on the record, puts his assertive, hard blowing persona on hold in favor of a somewhat laid- back, nuanced approach to the heads and to improvisation. It doesn't feel like a compromise or a concession to marketplace realities as much as another dimension of a very large, diverse talent.

Pianist Alan Broadbent makes for an ideal foil, particularly by enriching the three duo tracks, "Little Girl Blue," "Chelsea Bridge" and "Ask Me Now." While Webb plays the melodies, Broadbent is clearly an equal partner, leaving the impression of possessing a world of information at his fingertips, yet choosing his comments carefully, so as not to say too much or too little. He echoes pieces of Webb's interpretations of "Trouble Is A Man" and "Little Girl Blue." Broadbent's syncopated, chime-like chords and long, slippery single note runs inform the leader's statement of the out head of "Jitterbug Waltz."

Although everything hangs together nicely as a whole, the listener is advised not to get too comfortable, or let his/her attention lapse. Things change. In tandem, Webb and Broadbent make music that isn't dense or particularly busy, but is filled with arresting details and minute alterations of shade and texture. To cite an extreme example, "Chelsea Bridge" ranges from Broadbent's ethereal introduction to Webb's explosive cadenza.

Throughout the quartet tracks, bassist Putter Smith and drummer Paul Kreibich (whose smooth brushwork is exceptional) round out the band in fine fashion. This is not a group comprised of edgy, competing voices; rather, mutual respect rules, and —especially on "Trouble Is A Man"—it's a pleasure to hear each instrument operate in its own space. In the course of "Jitterbug Waltz," Smith's foundational bass line is every bit as important in the overall scheme of things as Broadbent's and the leader's solos.

The link between recent recordings in which Webb often improvises in a driven, extroverted manner and his comparatively relaxed work on Sets The Standard is the sophisticated way the saxophonist arranges his ideas. Regardless of the setting there's always continuity, design and purpose that shuns incomplete thoughts or unrelated fragments. On "These Things" (an "All The Things You Are" contrafact, and the only original composition on the record), Webb's solo is joined to the head, gradually expanding on short, silky melodies somewhat reminiscent of Paul Desmond. Brief double time runs suddenly take flight and then land smoothly, adding spice, yet leaving the solo's flow intact throughout "Jitterbug Waltz." "Ask Me Now" often features Webb's long, graceful lines, and leaves space for Broadbent's interjections in the lower and upper ends of the keyboard.

The various ways that Webb, Broadbent, Smith and Kreibich breathe new life into standards is a welcome change from recordings filled with abstract or doctrinaire compositions with little or no connection to real human emotions. Filled with enlightened individual and group expression, Sets The Standard welcomes listeners of all persuasions.

Recording Date February 28, 2017
If 2016’s All About Melody showcased Russell Malone’s love of a good melodic song, then 2017’s Time for the Dancers finds him building upon that sentiment and celebrating his affinity for sweet, rhythmic grooves. The guitarist’s third album for High Note, Time for the Dancers is a fluid, engaging production that finds Malone straddling the line between urbane, acoustic jazz standards, earthy funk, and virtuosic balladry. Helping him achieve this superlative balance are longtime bandmates pianist Rick Germanson, bassist Luke Sellick, and drummer Willie Jones III. Together, they play with the kind of nuanced interplay and sensitivity that come with years of live performance — which they have. With his acoustic, hollow-body guitar and warm, un-effected sound, Malone comes off as a grounded, no-nonsense musician; a swing-friendly progenitor of straight-ahead jazz and standards. All of which is true and evident here. That said, he’s also an incredibly soulful improvisationalist with a wide-ranging ear for all kinds of music. What’s so invigorating about his approach is just how seamlessly he is able to incorporate all that he hears into one gorgeously realized style. In that sense, he brings to mind a balance of such elder luminaries as Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, and yes, George Benson.

From the buoyant and dreamy, ’60s-influenced title track to the bluesy twang of “The Ballad of Hank Crawford,” Malone grounds the proceedings with his steady, rhythmic swing and perfectly timed attack. It’s a skill most evident on his funk-infused homage to his longtime friend, bassist Lonnie Plaxico, on “Leave It to Lonnie.” Centered on a tasty bass riff, the song finds Malone slowly building his groove-based solo, weaving in bits of crunchy atonalism and deliciously bluesy asides. Elsewhere, he applies an equally compelling energy to Jose Feliciano’s breezy “Theme from ‘Chico and the Man’,” and a poetic, gorgeously rendered, classically influenced solo take on Billy Joel’s ballad “And So It Goes.”

The Philippe Lemm Trio, comprised of Dutch drummer Philippe Lemm and American pianist and bassist Angelo Di Loreto and Jeff Koch, respectively, houses a dynamically creative, exciting, and fresh sound, spanning multiple influences from all of its members. The trio won the International B-Jazz competition in 2015 and the group’s performance of Di Loreto’s original composition “Salt Road” earned an ASCAP Jazz Composer Award in 2013. The three musicians met during their master’s degree at Manhattan School of Music in 2011, where they quickly realized that they had an undeniable musical chemistry and understanding of each other’s musical personalities. They began performing together in and out of the school, and eventually did a residency at the newly-formed True School of Music in Mumbai, India in August- December 2013, where they taught, gave masterclasses, and toured with Bollywood music star Shilpa Rao. Musically, the group’s sound draws influences from the classical, jazz, and prog rock idioms, to name a few. Cyrus Chestnut's 2016 effort, the superb Natural Essence, benefitted greatly from his pairing with the duo of bassist Buster Williams and drummer Lenny White. Thankfully, the pianist has followed up with another engaging set featuring the same veteran luminaries. An adept virtuoso talent, Chestnut soars alongside Williams and White on 2017's There's a Sweet Sweet Spirit. Elder jazz statesmen, Williams and White have decades of experience under their hats with credits for such legends as Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, Woody Shaw, and many others. Similarly, Chestnut has worked with such luminaries as Terence Blanchard, Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, and more. While all of his albums are worth checking out, there is something inspired and kinetic about his playing with Williams and White, as if they are all three pushing each other to discover new avenues of expression. Joining them this time on several tracks is yet another volcanic talent in vibraphonist Steve Nelson. Though he only appears on three cuts, his warm harmonic resonance contrasts beautifully with Chestnut's as they dig into an expansive late-'60s jazz sound on two of vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's best-known compositions, "Little B's Poem" and "The Littlest One of All." Away from Nelson, Chestnut displays his genre-bending skills on "Chopin Prelude," transfiguring the classical piece first with a cubist Thelonious Monk-style intro and later with a swinging Ellingtonian mid-section. Similarly compelling are the group's muscular and exotic take on Miles Davis' "Nardis" and a spritely reading of Williams' "Christina." Elsewhere, they deliver a languid and romantic take on the Stylistics' 1973 classic "You Make Me Feel Brand New," and dive headlong into the pianist's own Latin-infused "CDC." Ultimately, if there's one overriding sentiment that drives all of There's a Sweet Sweet Spirit, it's Chestnut and his band's spirit of soulful camaraderie.

Seventeen musicians-one sound. And a very convincing sound, at that. The SWR Big Band has so far been nominated four times for a Grammy - the most important music award in the world. Also it received in 2015 a Jazz Award in Cold ffom German music industry. Enjoyed a great honor in 2011, when it was the first German band ever suggested for the "Premio da Musica Brasileira", Brazil's most important music award. In the face of so much fame, it seems almost modest to say that the SWR Big Band is one of the best big bands in the world.

Sammy Nestico is a composer-arranger whose accomplishments and credits have earned him legendary status in the music business.

Today’s word that best describes him is “iconic.”

He has done it all: a host of big band arrangements including those for the Count Basie Band, The Airmen of Note and Germany’s SWR Orchestra, movie and television scores, and a variety of commercials.

Along the way, he has won a bunch of Grammy Awards and, judging by the smile that appears to never leave his face, he has had a great deal of fun doing what he loves to do.

He’s a perfect example of the adage: “Do what you love and the rest will follow.”

On June 9, 2017, SWR Music released A Cool Breeze: Sammy Nestico and the SWR Big Band which documents more of the ongoing love affair between this brilliant, Stuttgart-based big band and one of the most accomplished composer-arrangers in the history of big band Jazz.

Everything about this recording is simply splendid from the SWR’s technical execution of the arrangements, to the joyful and magical way Sammy’s charts play out on the listener’s ear to the audio quality which imbues the music with a rich texture and a warm sound. Listening to the music on this recording makes you realize why Big Band Jazz is a category apart and that when it’s done right, no other aspect of Jazz matches its majestic sonority.

Australia's Janet Seidel continues to work magic on popular songs of the past, many of which have become standards. Like her first volume honoring the art of sophisticated swing and ballads, Seidel chooses to work in small-group settings, sometimes with sax or cornet added, other times with strings. When the sax is in control it adds a jazzy tingling. On "Poinciana," tenor saxman Paul Williams sneaks in jazz figures behind Seidel and the strings, creating interesting counterpoint. Another highlight track is "Lonesome Road," where the singer, Maree Steinway's piano, and Chuck Morgan's guitar framed by the rhythm of David Seidel and John Morrison beget a version of this tune that is bouncy but also as relaxed as one could expect to encounter. Seidel's unapologetic admiration of Doris Day is evident with "Sentimental Journey." But there is no big band cum Les Brown here. Rather, it's another laid-back small group rendering, this time with bass, guitar, and drums. Seidel is the vocal counterpart of alto sax player Paul Desmond, who was renowned for his comfortable playing style and respect for the melody line. The closest to vocal gymnastics is on "Slow Boat to China," where the ambidextrous Baker switches to cornet. Seidel has cut eight albums paying tribute to great popular music for the La Brava label. Each is a testimony to her vocal artistry and this does no less. Highly recommended.

There are several arcs of history and experience intersecting on Bob Merrill's Tell Me Your Troubles—Songs by Joe Bushkin, Volume 1. The first is that of Joe Bushkin (1961—2004). Bushkin was a swing era pianist and composer best known for his association with trumpeter Bunny Berigan's band, guitarist Eddie Condon, Max Kaminsky, Joe Marsala, and Muggsy Spanier before World War II and Louis Armstrong, Bud Freeman, and Benny Goodman after the war. His style of composing, as evidenced on his son-in-law Bob Merrill's opening homage to him, is decidedly swing era with forays backwards into traditional jazz. It is quaint and historic. It is also vital and necessary. One does not know where they are going without an appreciation from where they came.

Bob Merrill's previous recording, Cheerin' Up The Universe (Accurate Records, 2015) might have had about the hokiest title, but its heart was clear: the dissemination of infectious music intent on raising smiles and causing heads to nod and feet to tap. Merrill comes across as a better-behaved Jack Sheldon with a more wholesome message. And there is a place for this. Merrill's sunny disposition shines bright on the present recording, reflecting his admiration for his father-in-law enough to devote multiple recordings to him. Was Bushkin the greatest performer? No, but that is not the point. Bushkin came to work and did his job and that was to compose music and perform it for entertainment and Tell Me Your Troubles is anything but short on entertainment.

Merrill lovingly puts together nine pieces either composed by, or associated with, Bushkin and is not stingy with his sharing the music. Merrill sings and trumpets on Bushkin's best known piece, "Oh Look at Me Now." He firmly establishes himself as the leader and curator of this collection of music, while allowing the likes of Kathryn Crosby and Wycliffe Gordon to sing these treasured songs. Crosby upends "There'll Be a Hot Time in the Town of Berlin," while Gordon gives his Satchmo best on "Boogie Woogie Blue Plate. That Harry Allen and Jay Leonhart are on hand is all gravy. This is as happy a recording as Cheerin' Up The Universe with a big heart an bow to the artist who was Joe Bushkin

Performing since she was 17, Janet Seidel is now one of Australia's more prominent vocalists. She records exclusively for the La Brava label. Despite the title of her latest effort, this is by no means an album of easy listening, lounge type music. Even though there's the presence of a heavy cadre of strings on several tracks, they are offset by the presence of musicians steeped in the jazz tradition, such as Tom Baker on tenor sax. Also having a jazz flavor, "I've Got a Crush on You" is done in a small-group setting; Paul Williams provides a mellow background, and his clarinet contrasts nicely with Seidel's simple, straightforward rendition of this popular classic. Even on those tunes where the strings are present, there is still a feel for jazz. A slow-paced arrangement of "The Sweetest Sounds" mixes the strings with Kevin Hunt's melodic piano playing. With a voice that combines all the good features of Blossom Dearie with some Peggy Lee and Doris Day stirred in for seasoning, Seidel is at home in a number of styles. She can lull you with a sentimental ballad and then get naively erotic with a blues. She gets together with Col Nolan's Hammond B3 organ for a version of "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You" that blends innocence with allurement. The Latin beat gets a nod with "Mas Que Nada," and a touch of soulful regret is heard in "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" behind Tom Baker's wailing tenor sax. There's a come hither quality in her interpretation of "Love for Sale," featuring Baker on cornet. Seidel takes on a poetic bearing on "Fools Rush In" which, as much as any track, reveals her ability to convey the essence of the story embedded in the lyrics she sings. Irrespective of genre, all the tunes are delivered in a delightful, ear-catching, engaging manner. Featuring Australian musicians of the highest caliber, this CD of more than 60 minutes of varied vocalizing is highly recommended.

One of Europe's best guitarists pays tribute to Wes Montgomery on this mostly trio outing from 2003. Irio DePaula is obviously influenced to some extent by Montgomery's style of playing, though he finds his own voice in this collection of ten Montgomery compositions and the well-known standard "For Heaven's Sake." The best examples of his work include the very fluid interpretations of "Jingles" and Four on Six," along with a soulful take of "Bumpin'." Organist Riccardo Ballerini provides strong support without overdoing it, while drummer Petro Jodice helps to keep the musicians on track. Vibraphonist Claudio Lo Cascio adds a nice touch to two tracks. Irio DePaula has recorded extensively for Philology and deserves to be more widely known; this fine effort should help spread the word.
