9. Room 118
10. Invitation
11. Hallucination

Personnel: Alan Nelson(Drums), Eddie Gomez(Bass), Michael Cochrane(Piano).

Label: SteepleChase
On Gesture of Faith, veteran Cochrane demonstrates a direct, fat-free linear style with a hint of Bill Evans in his chord voicings. Eddie Gomez’s walking and crosscutting bass lines provide another source of interest and delight, as does Alan Nelson’s drumming. “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was” swings cleanly as the trio exhibits the art of interplay as well as more traditional lead and support roles. Cochrane’s chordal exposition of “Invitation” is rich and exotic. In addition to Cochrane’s skill, this album reminds us again that Gomez is one of jazz’s top bassists.

9. Erie Blues

Personnel: Michael Cochrane – Piano; Daryl Johns – Bass; Steve Johns – Drums.

Label: SteepleChase
Wonderfully warm work from the great Michael Cochrane a pianist we always love, and who also seems to be playing a bit of Fender Rhodes on this album too! The instrument's not credited on the back, but turns up in an excellent version of Denny Zeitlin's "Quiet Now" which is handled by Cochrane with just the right sort of space and tone to really open up the composition in a way that's very different from the bolder, more soulful tones the pianist uses throughout the rest of the album. As always with a record from Michael, the original tunes are some of the best and include "Discovery", "MC's Bossa", "Erie Blues", and "Fantasy"all the kind of numbers that always have us digging for his records whenever we get the chance. Other tunes include "Oblivion", "Yesterdays", and "Visitation" and the trio includes Daryl Johns on bass and Steve Johns on drums.

And in the 14-ty it has entered into a contract with a major label to record a debut full-length record Sapphire Birds. "I wanted to create an album that would connect with the modern jazz standards and original compositions," Maya says. For the arrangement meets the first class pianist Miles Black - "to work with him a pleasure," she admits. Song Meghan Trainor and Christina Aguilera shone jazz colors and even with the support of a mentor Maya Ray, saxophonist Corey wides - with him phenomenal Maya met when she was 12, during the debut performance at the International Jazz Festival in Vancouver. A final version of "Summertime" performed only by a bass guitar, but in two languages.

This 16-track retrospective covers ten years of jazz/pop singer/songwriter Marilyn Scott's career, from her first solo recordings in the early '90s to 2001. You'll probably find this album in the jazz section, and there are a few standards on the program, but the bulk of her repertoire is original and her sound is very definitely modern, in an R&B/smooth jazz vein. The tracks gathered here include collaborations with George Duke and the Yellowjackets' Jimmy Haslip, and several songs were co-written with Brenda Russell. The selections don't follow much of a narrative arc -- you don't really get the sense of an artist growing and developing in any particular direction. Instead, Scott explores various avenues of musical expression, from quiet storm-flavored ballads like "The Look of Love" to the slightly awkward soul-funk of "Get Home" and modern reinterpretations of jazz classics like "You Don't Know What Love Is." Her cover of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" is technically impressive, but ultimately too imitative of the original to be very interesting. In general, though, this is a handy and attractive overview of what has been, so far, an impressive career.

Lyambiko - Sings Gershwin (2011)

So, friends, sounds Lyambiko. Germany's African roots and musical genes. My grandfather played in a jazz band in the 30s. Dad was singing in the church choir, and in his spare time, indulged in jazz sound in the same group bent on swing rhythms. Apple from apple-tree - Lyambiko school years he mastered the saxophone and clarinet, in parallel doing classical singing. And jazz, which is typical, too, attracted her attention. In 1999 Lyambiko travels to Berlin - to study at the College of Music, but do not forget about jazz. Regular performances in Berlin clubs are seen by critics, and this during a tour in America Lyambiko called "the most promising female vocalist for the last time." In February 2008, having already 5 albums discography marked by various awards, Lyambiko decided to record an album-dedication to Nina Simone - the legendary singer, whose album inspired her career jazz vocalist. But in 2011, also released Lyambiko dedication - now the composer George Gershwin. I call it a kind of return to the roots, and in the development of jazz classics she helped the band members - pianist Mark Leventhal, bassist and drummer Robin Draganik Henry Koberling. If Simon dedication embodied the idea for about eight years, there was a process much faster - in just a week, it was decided, some Gershwin songs will be on the record.

Larry Schneider on this latest recording plays alto sax instead of tenor sax which is his instrument. And when a jazz saxophone player picks up alto, there is one thing in his mind: Charlie Parker. “Larry Schneider Plays Charlie Parker” is what this CD is all about. A formidable task superbly executed.

Larry Schneider’s latest outing for SteepleChase is a pianoless trio format which provides the tenorman with more freedom and space. “ Larry Schneider is one of the select minority who consistently rises to the challenge implicit in this type of trio. He thrives in the looseness of the context and the choices it affords him .”

10. I Remember You

Kye Marshall (cello), Don Thompson (bass & piano), Dan Ionescu (guitar), Mark Duggan (percussion).
Kye is a professional cellist and composer of both classical and jazz music and an avant garde improviser. She has produced five CDs: Standard Time, a compilation of jazz standards; Winter's End and Say When, original jazz compositions with Don Thompson and In the Moment and Chiaroscuro, spontaneous compositions with Thomas Baker.
Kye's compositions have been heard on television and radio, in films, dance performances and theatre and in various Toronto venues such as Glenn Gould Studios, Harbourfront, NY Centre for the Performing Arts, and the Music Gallery as well as in Austria and the United States.
An eclectic performer, Kye has played jazz, classical and free music in numerous venues from Roy Thomson Hall to the Rex Tavern with various ensembles including her jazz quartet, the Epic String Quartet, the National Ballet Orchestra, and the Baker\Marshall Duo.
Kye also uses her improvisational skills as a music psychotherapist.
Kye Marshall's classical compositions are influenced by her work as a jazz musician, a free improviser, a music psychotherapist and a classical performer. They incorporate the melodic angularity, harmonic colour and rhythmic vitality of the jazz idiom, and, inspired by free improvisation, a strong sense of colour, emotional intensity, and form based on process rather than structure. In her jazz compositions, her classical background is evidenced in her use of the tone row, varied formal structures and unusual instrumentation.
Another influence is her work as a music psychotherapist where her improvisations with clients inspire her compositions with an emotional freshness and immediacy. They give a new perspective to polyphonic writing through a multi layering of contrasting, sometimes conflicting, voices.

"Standard Time [is a] combination of great playing and…sheer sonic majesty… If you like your jazz straight up, Standard Time will make you very happy. If you like your jazz to take you into new musical territory, it will make you ecstatic.”

This release we're sharing now represents Joe making his debut on Capitol Records. It was recorded in NYC on June 19-21, 1962. In his day Bucci created quite a new, dynamic Hammond sound which was eventually noticed by the great Basie. He was first impressed when he heard the Massachusetts-born organist at a 1961 jazz concert that featured Bucci along with the Basie band. This led to an engagement in the Count's own New York night club, where the Bucci duo, including drummer Joe Riddick, more than justified Basie's faith by packing in the patrons night after night during a sensational four-week stay. The crowd's response there and later at the celebrated Newport Jazz Festival convinced the Count that he was far from alone in his estimation of Bucci's talent.

Positioned squarely in the mainstream, at home in the worlds of jazz and pop standards as well as the blues, comfortable with small groups and big bands, Ernestine Anderson regularly received a lot of airplay on traditional jazz radio stations. She fit those demographics well with her tasteful, slightly gritty, moderately swinging contralto; she rarely probed too deeply into emotional quagmires (and thus didn't disturb the dispositions of those who use the radio as background) but always gave listeners an honest musical account. Anderson's career actually got rolling in the embryonic R&B field at first; as a teenager, she sang with Russell Jacquet's band in 1943, and she moved on to the Johnny Otis band from 1947 to 1949, making her first recording with Shifty Henry's orchestra in 1947 for the Black & White label. In the '50s, however, she converted over to the jazz side, working with Lionel Hampton in 1952-1953 and recording with a band featuring Jacquet, Milt Jackson, and Quincy Jones in 1953, and with Gigi Gryce in 1955. Upon hearing the latter record, Rolf Ericson booked Anderson on a three-month Scandinavian tour; while in Sweden, she made a recording called Hot Cargo that, ironically, established her reputation in America. Once back in the U.S., she signed with Mercury and made a number of albums for that label until the early '60s. She moved to England in 1965 and remained largely invisible on the American radar until 1975, when Ray Brown heard her sing at the Turnwater Festival in Canada. Brown became her manager, and got her to appear at the 1976 Concord Jazz Festival, which led to a Concord contract that immediately bore fruit with the albums Live from Concord to London and Hello Like Before.

These and other comeback albums made her a top-flight jazz attraction in the U.S. again this time for the long haul and in the '80s, she was recording with the Hank Jones Trio, George Shearing, Benny Carter, the Capp-Pierce Juggernaut, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and her own quartet. By 1992, she had attracted major-label attention once again, signing with Quincy Jones' Qwest outfit. For Koch, Anderson issued Isn't It Romantic in 1998. The live album I Love Being Here with You appeared in 2002, while 2003’s Love Makes the Changes found her signed to Highnote. The label released her album A Song for You in 2009. Anderson remained with the label for 2011's Nightlife, a live album that featured the singer in a number of small-group settings, with a guest appearance by labelmate Houston Person. Anderson passed away from natural causes on March 10, 2016 at the age of 87.

…On every recording, of course, the choice of material is disparate, as is Alexander's approach to it (solos are always fresh and persuasive, even within a proven framework). The support group also varies, albeit less so, as Alexander has a circle of musicians with whom he feels comfortable and prefers to work. In this instance, they are pianist Harold Mabern (a longtime friend and former mentor), bassist Nat Reeves and drummer Joe Farnsworth. Taken as a unit, "reliable" is their middle name. Alexander needn't worry about his teammates faltering or dropping the ball, even on his original compositions ("Nomor Senterbress," "Remix Blues"), touchstones such as Henry Mancini's "Charade" or the passionate "Cavatina" from The Deer Hunter.

The tragic death of Princess Diana reminded everyone of the impact a single person can have, and in turn, Elton John's moving tribute at her funeral reflected the great role music can play as emotional catharsis. Tribute to Jeff by David Garfield & Friends achieves that for all those who participated, but is in many ways the antithesis of the rewritten "Candle in the Wind," vigorously celebrating the life of multiple Grammy-winning drummer and first-call L.A. session cat Jeff Porcaro rather than choosing to mourn the tragedy of his early death in 1992 at age 38. Though best known for his skinwork in the pop supergroup Toto, Porcaro's influence on the music scene ranged beyond the light pop/rock the band was known for; he grew up on jazz and his diverse timekeeping skills were tapped by everyone from Boz Scaggs, Bruce Springsteen, and Don Henley to Stan Getz and Larry Carlton. He was also the backbone of the longstanding L.A. club-hopping band Los Lobotomys, the fusion-oriented '80s and early-'90s answer to Tom Scott & the L.A. Express featuring pianist Garfield and Toto member Steve Lukather on guitar (Joe Sample would occasionally sit in on second keyboard). In his two decades on the scene, Porcaro made a wealth of friends from all genres, ranging from hard rock to soul, blues, and straight-ahead jazz. Garfield, a veteran of the L.A. scene known for his long-term stint as George Benson's musical director, recalls his late friend as "the ultimate team player, never a forefront kind of guy, with a special camaraderie with musicians." As ringleader, arranger, and producer of the project, as well as lead performer, Garfield succeeds in capturing that sort of ensemble spirit. With 75 musicians participating, the pianist faced a four-month logistical nightmare of studio schedule-crunching in L.A., Nashville, and New York, but, using Porcaro as a muse (by virtue of lighting candles and occasionally playing cassettes of the guest of honor's interviews), Garfield & Friends pull off the ultimate wake, a remarkably all-encompassing, frequently unpredictable overview that, well, Porcaro would have doubtless killed to play on.

On her 19th album, Cassandra Wilson, ever the musical chameleon, changes directions once more. She is arguably the greatest living female jazz singer. Well known for her blues, soul, pop covers, and jazz standards, her smoky alto bends almost everything to its will. Wilson's phrasing is utterly unique, as original as any horn player's or pianist's music. Another Country, co-produced by Wilson and guitarist Fabrizio Sotti, was recorded in three different studios in Florence, New Orleans, and New York. She wrote all but three selections here: there are two instrumentals by Sotti and a reading of "O Sole Mio." Other players include bassist Nicola Sorato, Julien Labro on accordion, and percussionists Mino Cinelu and Lekan Babalola. Opener "Red Guitar" displays the wisdom of this small-group approach beautifully. Her vocal illustrates a mysterious, sensual jazz blues that is accented by Sotti, hand drums, and an atmospheric, unintrusive accordion. "No More Blues" is more elegiac, a spacy jazz tune with fine syncopation and the suggested undercurrent of a blues backbeat. "Almost Twelve" is an ambitious attempt at bossa nova but it falls short. Wilson restrains herself to fit the song form rather than retrofit it to her voice; it's too much of a compromise. The Latin undertones in "Passion" work far better and the singer is able to engage her lower register and sing in near counterpoint to her accompanists. It's a heady, intoxicating swirl of lyric harmony and rhythmic invention. With its classical trappings and the prominence of the accordion, "O Sole Mio" should sound corny -- it doesn't. Wilson delivers it as a haunting folk song and reinvents it for the 21st century. The slippery meld of jazz, folk, and pop in the set's longest tune, "When Will I See You Again," makes it the most unusual and engaging track here. Wilson's compositional language is as imaginative as her singing, and Sotti's skeletal yet seemingly lush arrangements are sumptuous. The title track employs samba, post-bop jazz, and nuevo flamenco. Wilson's voice compels her poetic lyrics to assert themselves over the melody, as Sotti soars in his tasteful solo. Though there are a couple of missteps here, Another Country is a welcome new phase for Wilson. Not only are her boundaries as a singer expanding with her musical choices; her songwriting instincts and languages are developing exponentially as well.

Although sometimes associated with jazz or smooth, Carol Duboc is really a more pop-oriented singer in the vein of Norah Jones. Her voice is pleasing, she swings lightly and she pays close attention to lyrics, sounding hip without being adventurous. Joined by a supportive rhythm section, Duboc performs seven originals (six of which were co-written with her keyboardist Tim Carmon) and six pop/rock standards, reviving such songs as "Sunny," "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Blackbird" in fairly fresh and attractive ways.

Trumpet – Carmell Jones
Tenor Saxophone – Jimmy Heath
Piano – Barry Harris
Bass – George Tucker
Drums – Roger Humphries

Recorded May 8, 1965 NYC.

Hard bopper Carmell Jones is in fine form on this 1965 outing, Jay Hawk Talk. Together with tenor Jimmy Heath, pianist Barry Harris, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Roger Humphries, Jones confidently tackles a half-dozen tunes. From the piano/bass riff at the beginning of "Jay Hawk Talk" to the Parker-esque kickoff of "Beepdurple," the band holds a steady, driving groove. Both of those instrumentals, plus "Dance of the Night Child," were written by Jones and stand comfortably beside the other selections on this album. Tucker kicks off a particularly affecting version of "Willow Weep for Me," with a simple descending bass run. Jones enters with a full and rich tone for a beautiful, extended solo, and is followed by Harris, who emphasizes the bluesy, late-night feel of the piece. The band turns in a nine-minute version of Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love?" that pulls out all the stops, and gives Heath plenty of room to show that he can fly as high and play as fast as Charlie Parker himself. Throughout the album, Tucker's bass work adds greatly to the overall texture; Tucker and Humphries together provide a steady pulse with lots of charged rhythm to keep the whole project stimulating. Jay Hawk Talk will remind everyone of Jones' distinctive voice. Like Johnny Griffin, Jones moved to Europe in the '60s, greatly lowering his profile in the United States. This re-release of an old classic should help to familiarize everyone once again with a great trumpeter.

Tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins recorded his quartet on several occasions in 1986 at the now-defunct Dino's in Pasadena, hence the title of the CD. Not only is the sound that Perkins achieved very intimate, as if the listener was a member of the audience, but the band is extremely tight and adventurous. Sadly, the opener "Bolivia" is prematurely faded, and Perkins also explains in his liner notes that he had to edit some solos to make the music fit the CD. Pianist Alan Broadbent's driving chords inspire Perkins during a percolating "Yardbird Suite," where the leader is not adverse to taking chances in his solo; a lovely "Someday My Prince Will Come" and an understated take of John Carisi's "Israel" are also noteworthy. Gene Cherico plays bass on five tracks, with Putter Smith taking his place on the other four numbers. Recommended.

Perhaps best known as keyboard player with smooth jazz super-group (the) Rippingtons, Bill Heller has released his own solo collection, the excellent ‘Find The Way’. It fuses together jazz of varying complexions through the combined talents of guest performers (and Rippingtons band-mates) Jeff Kashiwa, Rico Belled and Dave Karasony plus fine work from Eric Marienthal Ronnie Gutierrez, Joel Rosenblatt and Dave Anderson. However, that said, this is very much Heller’s album. He writes all twelve tracks, produces throughout and, with his mastery on keys, leaves listeners wondering why it has taken him so long to move center stage.

Indeed it was back in 1998 that Heller made his first Rippingtons appearance. That was for the ‘Topaz’ CD and he has been performing live with the band since March of 2001. By that time Jeff Kashiwa was already a regular member of the line-up and with ‘Find The Way’ it is Kashiwa who helps get the show on the road with tremendous sax and flute for the opening ‘Guaraldi’. This mellifluous song has an aura of the Rippingtons about it and much the same can be said of the fabulous ‘Afrikaan’ that is right up there with the best that ‘Find The Way’ has to offer.
