I was born in the city of Zalaegerszeg, on 8 May, 1983. I was only four years old when we moved to Budapest and I started my studies there. From my musician family, to my cimbalom player father since my birth I was surrounded with music and my talent showed in a very early age, however my life went to a different direction. Yet in Zalaegerszeg, I begun to go to kindergarten music but because of moving I had considerably long break, fourteen years. Thereafter at age eighteen after my high-school graduation exam it defined in me that I would like to learn to sing. At my first significant performance I met my future husband bassist József Barcza Horváth and thankfully through him I found the genre of music were I can express most of all my self: that is Jazz. He was the person who introduced me to my later singing teacher, the known and acclaimed Gábor Winand. Finishing Economy Technical College and External Trade Administration Department Qualification achievement I wanted entirely devote my self to singing. In this there was interference, I was studying at the Study of Music Art School and also at the same time at Loránd Eötvös University of Science Liberal Arts English and Russian department, nevertheless when I had to choose the decision was obvious. From thereon nothing could hampered that I want to spend my day to days with singing jazz and in big part because when I was learning singing I begun to perform as well. At first with Robert Szakcsi Lakatos trio and after with more and more combos. After three and a half years of study and continuous performances I applied to the Famous Monteux Jazz festival were they held the third voice competition in 2005 called Shure Montreux Jazz voice Competition were from all around the world under 30 years of age singers could apply. To my big joy I was invited to the only 8 semifinalist, where I came out as the first prize winner and also as the winner of the audience award. For me this achievement is not only important because it comes with prestige but because such artists (Barbara Hendricks, Randy Crawford among others) were judging me that I look up professionally with out any condition. In January 2006 I took part on Conference of International Associaton for Jazz Education (IAJE Conference) in New York, and I performed in Hilton New York Hotel and in the club of Lincoln Center, Dizzy's Club. My partners were: Gilad Hekselman, Israel (2005 Montreux Guitar Competition Winner), Harold Lopez Nussa-Torres, Cuba (2005 Montreux Piano Competition Winner) and Geoff Newman and Anthony Pinciotti from USA. In 2006 I won a scholarship, which can be given to three young Hungarian musicians every year. I am very proud of this scholarship, because the jury consisted of very recognized Hungarian musicians, Béla Sa-chi and Kalman Olah amongst others. I returned to Montreux as a performer with my beloved band - Róbert, József and András - and we made a concert on 30 June 2006 before Paolo Conte.

Krzysztof Popek: alto flute; Piotr Wojtasik: trumpet, flugelhorn; Nicolas Simion: tenor saxophone, bass clarinet; George Cables: piano; Cameron Brown: bass; Victor Lewis: drums.

Time has stamped Krzysztof Popek as a potent force on the Polish jazz scene. The flautist could have found a comfort zone in his native land given the accolades he accumulated there. Instead, he gathered a varied supporting cast of international musicians over the years, and built a strong edifice to his musical explorations. He stamps his credentials all over again on this recording. Popek explores through the senses of several composers including himself. His "Letters and Leaves" gets a luminous head from George Cables before the melody dances in. Popek flows in with languid lines, turning in a captivating conversation with the pianist. The edge comes from Piotr Wojtasik, the trumpet cutting in; the dynamic fleshing the whole with just the right intensity.

"Nicole's Soul" has a translucent beauty ushered in by the ebb and flow of the flute. Wojtasik, who has long been part of Popek's journey, is convoluting and flinty as he feeds into the permutations without fragmenting the mood. And when it comes to the ensemble, the playing is silky and emotive, the finesse shining. The bop driven "So It Seems" not only offers contrast but also shows the ability of the band to find its comfort zone in different settings. The heated swell of Nicolas Simion's tenor, the pulsing lines of Cameron Brown's bass, the rhythmic snap of Victor Lewis's drums propulse the groove are the glove to the inventive hand of the front line.

Popek is a craftsmen hewing both to the mainstream yet never shying from improvising with a vibrant sense of adventure. He has a fine band to go with these sensibilities. And he has an enjoyable record to go with it. - Jerry D'Souza

Composer Joel Levine speaks a unique voice with the recorder with his debut release The Whistleblower on the Iyouwe label.
The 13 song disc, Levine’s first as a solo artist, finds the Toronto based recordist joined by singers and instrumentalists including legendary drummer and multi-Grammy award winner Lenny White.
The Whistleblower‘s soulful and swinging collection includes four original compositions by Levine, two originals by Lenny White and 7 songs by an eclectic mix of artists including “The Black Angel” by Kenny Barron, George Duke’s “Love”, Gil Scott Heron’s “Peace Go with You Brother”,”Come Unto Him” from Handel’s Messiah and “Trouble in Mind”, a classic blues, by Richard M. Jones, just to name a few.
Produced by Lenny White, the project assembled New York and Philadelphia’s session artists like Chris Williams, Chevy Chevis and Evelyn Simpson on vocals as well as some burning solos by guitar virtuoso Tom Guarna and pianists Anthony Wonsey and Michael Wooten. White provides some swinging drums including behind Levine’s solo on “Love” by George Duke.

Levine says, “I grew up in Philly where I began to play the recorder in the early ’60s but when the time came to move on to another instrument, as most students do, I stayed with the recorder. Everything changed when I heard Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, especially Coltrane. I wanted to play that music on the recorder— which, as far as I could tell, nobody ever had. I wanted to speak using the voice of the recorder.”

“The vibe is eclectic and the sound is new. Lenny’s role as a producer on the CD enabled me to present the recorder in a way it’s never been heard before, the listener is going to hear more of this instrument than they ever thought was possible.”

The romantic dream of many aspiring jazz musicians is to sail into New York City, drawn by the magnetism of the metropolis, and to seek an apprenticeship amongst the heroes and legends of the music. It isn’t often that these dreams come true, but for saxophonist/clarinetist/composer Mike McGinnis they did in his friendship and collaboration, with jazz legends Art Lande and Steve Swallow, showcased on the trio’s Recurring Dream.

Originally from Maine, McGinnis grew up focusing on classical saxophone, leading him to the Eastman School of Music, where pianist Michael Cain introduced him to a coterie of musicians who experimented in melding jazz and classical musical concepts, including what was called Third Stream music in the 1950s and 1960s. Cain also led McGinnis to the music of pianist Art Lande, whose remarkable playing is beyond category on his own far reaching projects and those by his early band, Rubisa Patrol. Both musical conceptions had a big impact on McGinnis.

It wasn’t long before McGinnis met Lande at a friend’s wedding, where the intimidated McGinnis jammed with the pianist. There was an immediate creative spark between the two and they began to correspond, becoming close friends and collaborators for the next 15 years.

It was WNYC host David Garland who suggested the work of clarinet legend Jimmy Giuffre to McGinnis, who had begun his serious study of the clarinet once he moved to New York and began to hear Chris Speed, Ben Goldberg and Marty Ehrlich regularly. Already having been an acolyte of similar approaches to jazz and improvisation, McGinnis became obsessed with Giuffre’s music. It wasn’t long before he was savoring the recordings of Giuffre’s incredible trio that featured pianist Paul Bley and bassist Steve Swallow.

McGinnis had seen Swallow’s name tagged to tunes with bizarre titles in the Real Book but it took until this time and really hearing the bassist’s incredible playing for McGinnis to study his expansive oeuvre. In 2006, Ohad Talmor asked McGinnis to sub in his chamber ensemble for a European tour, where, remarkably, Swallow was the featured composer and in the bass chair. McGinnis took quick advantage to develop a relationship with Swallow, savoring his stories, witticisms and generous spirit.

On the eve of the tour, McGinnis was surprised to discover that Lande and Swallow had been involved in the flourishing jazz scene of the Bay Area in the 1960s, including as members of the same jazz rock band with saxophonist Mel Martin and trumpeter Tom Harrell. Since that time, they had only played once together at a festival in Europe. The seed was planted.

For the past 10 years, McGinnis has maintained a deep friendship with both musicians. His musical connection between the two grew exponentially, making them two of his most inspired and satisfying collaborators. McGinnis’s dream to record with the two was waylaid by finances and his own need to be “ready technically” for such an endeavor. It was after the great Paul Bley’s passing that McGinnis knew that he was going to have to shake any concerns he had and get the recording done.

McGinnis was able to finally realize his dream in 2016 as he invited Lande and Swallow to Brooklyn for a weekend of performing and recording. The trio recorded nearly three hours of music at Systems Two Recording Studios, which was winnowed down to the program on the arresting Recurring Dream.

The recording begins with Mel Martin’s “Mel’s Drive In,” a funky piece sans drums that features McGinnis on soprano sax and represents the beginning of Lande and Swallow’s musical relationship. The freely played “Circle Dance” introduces McGinnis’s clarinet dramatically into the sound world of these two legends. McGinnis’s “The Rising” is adapted from one of his concertos and is played rhapsodically by the trio. Written for this trio, “Hearth” is a newer piece by McGinnis and a tribute to his wife and the feeling of wellbeing she has bestowed upon him.

Lande’s “Constantinople” provides a wonderful example of the pianist’s gifts as a composer and harmonic thinker. The playful “Bend Over Backwards” is a perfect spotlight on Swallow’s gregarious and quirky personality, musically and otherwise. Swallow’s lovely “Amazing” perfectly encapsulates the fantastic way Swallow composes, highlighting his fantastic voice leading and colorful harmonies. “Drat Recurring Dream” is a Lande “de-rangement” of “Darn That Dream” which imaginatively exploits parts of the song that are rarely utilized, like lyrical elements apart from the main theme.

Mike McGinnis has been fortunate to see some of his fantasies come to fruition. He was able to meet, befriend, and gain knowledge from some incredible musicians, specifically his trio mates Art Lande and Steve Swallow. Then, together, they were able to arrange and compose a fantastic document of what friendship and being musically simpatico sound like, Recurring Dream.

Since 1963 she has been working as an actress on stage (Mephisto, 1983) on film (Blonde dolly, 1987) and in cabarets (Tingel tangel, 1983-1984). But more than anything, she has made a career in music.

As a singer she started off singing the songs of Bertolt Brecht in 1983, and was a member of Nedly Elstak's Seven singers and a horn. She also formed the Astrid Seriese/Nedly Elstak kwintet with him. In 1985 she met composer Louis Andriesen, the most influential and renowned Dutch composer of contemporary music. She has been performing his compositions ever since then (Kaalslag, De tijd, Y despues).

Their most notable collaboration was M is man music mozart. The music was composed by Andriessen for a BBC television film, directed by Peter Greenaway, starring Astrid Seriese. It was rewritten for theatre group Hollandia in 1990, and performed with orchestra De volharding.

In 1985 Astrid Seriese was part of the Dutch entry for the Belgian Knokke songcontest. The Dutch team consisted of three completely different singers: Astrid, Julya Lo'ko and Mathilde Santing. They won the contest, and their collaboration was so successful that they toured the country together (The good thing, 1991).

She played and sang in The good, the bad and the fat, based on Marie Redonnet's book Hotel splendid (1988) as well as in the opera-production Fausto by Harry de Wit, about the life of Fausto Coppi.

In 1992 she made her first solo-album Eclipse, which was highly praised by the Dutch critics and sold extremely well. She made two more albums since then: Secret world (1994) and Into temptation (1996). In 1995 she composed and performed the soundtrack of Veroordeeld (Condemned) in collaboration with percussionist Peter Meuris, a series of five documentary films. The soundtrack album Condemned was released in 1995. Her new solo-album will be released in 1999.

In 1996 she was asked to compose music to a theatre production of Euripides' Women of Troy (Zuidelijk Toneel) in 1996. She wrote songs that were performed by her and other members of the cast.

She has toured the country with her own band ever since 1993: the Eclipse-tour, followed by her Secret world-tour (1994/1995), and the Into temptation-tour (1996/1997).

Singer Astrid Seriese and gitarist Martijn van Agt have composed the music to De Kinderen van de Hondsberg (The Children of Hondsberg): a series of five documentary films in which the lives of several mentally disabled children are reflected. The series was broadcast in 1998 by NCRV-television.

Rob Mazurek cornet, piano, prepared piano, electronics.

Recorded for Rai Radiotre Suite Jazz, November 4, 2014, Rome

Rob Mazurek has long been entrenched in his eclectic, global and multi-media creative sphere making it easy for listeners to forget his musical roots. With his 1994 leader debut, Man Facing East, he had already shown signs of breaking with convention, particularly on the title track of that album. The electro-acoustic cornet and keyboard player and visual artist began his music career in Chicago, working his way through hard bop and progressive rock before finding his place in the avant-garde/free improvisation sub-genres. The latter forms do little justice to the unique and varied approaches that Mazurek pursues across multiple group formations. Rome, is Mazurek’s first solo outing since Vortice of the Faun (2015), a very different, all-electronic noise album.

The cornet—one of many tools employed by Mazurek—has an upfront role that the artist has not extensively utilized in open playing for some time. Equal standing is given to acoustic piano and prepared piano, in contrast to Mazurek’s frequent use of electronic keyboards. He also incorporates electronics on Rome but to a lesser—and more subtle—degree than in much of his recent work.

Rome consists of four relatively long tracks, each being dedicated to artists of varying influences. “Twombly at New Church” refers to painter and sculptor Cy Twombly whose projects focus on cultural aspects. Mazurek’s cornet dominates the minimalist piece where haunting melody and stark silences alternate in space. “Gazing Through Walls (Two Paintings By Caravaggio)” is inspired by Michelangelo da Caravaggio, a sixteenth century Italian painter whose work influenced the Baroque period and featured the use of light to emphasize human emotion. Here, Mazurek primarily works with the piano but with subtle shadings from electronics.

“King of Rome (For Pino Saulo)” refers to a well-known Italian radio producer at Radio3, and a concert promoter, dedicated to bringing the avant-garde to Italy’s jazz audiences. While Mazurek’s approach remains largely minimal on this piece, there are more of his familiar extended techniques at play. Much of the second half of the fifteen-plus minute composition is spent playing the strings inside the piano, giving the piece an exotic feel. The title says much about the nature of the closing piece, “Sweet Life in Disrepair (For Fellini).” Quirky, and by far the most abstract piece in the collection, its seventeen minutes are roughly divided between explosive brass expressions and the dark, dramatic piano that rumbles to the closing.

Mazurek is now widely recognized as a visual artist with multiple residencies and exhibits, so his affinity with that world and his ability to draw inspiration from the same, should be no surprise. Rome was recorded live for Rai Radiotre Suite Jazz in 2014 and it provides listeners an opportunity to hear Mazurek play in a more unadorned manner than his recent projects lend themselves to. His skills as a pianist will be an ear-opener to many recent fans as well. Rome adds yet another outstanding layer to Mazurek’s œuvre.

A true milestone, the album was only the second jazz recording to win the top honors in the award’s history, with the first being Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz and João Gilberto in 1965, 43 years prior. Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band marks its 20th anniversary with the release of their sublime fifth album, Body and Shadow, a succinct nine-track meditation on lightness/darkness that arrives like a balm for the soul, ebbing and flowing with grace, subtlety and no shortness of beauty. The album will be released on vinyl and CD, and will be available on all digital retailers and streaming services, on November 10. The lead track “Broken Leg Days” is available today to stream, download, or receive immediately with album download pre-order.

Formed in 1997, the Fellowship released their eponymous Blue Note debut in 1998, but the bond among the musicians goes back even further. Brian Blade, the band’s namesake and drummer, first met pianist Jon Cowherd in 1988 while attending Loyola University in New Orleans, and they met bassist Chris Thomas in the Crescent City a year later. With Myron Walden (alto saxophone and bass clarinet) and Melvin Butler (tenor saxophone), the Fellowship Band’s sturdy unified bond (“we think of the band as a collective instrument,” Cowherd says) has evolved with every album, and Body and Shadow, which also features Denver-based guitarist Dave Devine, is an extension of that evolution.

Blade and Cowherd wrote, arranged and produced the songs for Body and Shadow, which was recorded at the historic Columbus Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island. The experience reminded Blade of recording the band’s debut with producer Daniel Lanois at the Teatro, a former movie theater in Oxnard, California.

“It is always great to be in the moment and in process with the band,” says Blade. “We come in with all our grand plans and then there’s this yielding to, ‘Okay, here’s what’s actually being captured.’ Maybe not what I thought but another feeling, another energy, which is unpredictable. There’s joy in the whole mystery of what we are hoping to create. You step into the process to see what you’re made of, individually and together. Since we’ve shared so much time together, that trust and the sort of inherent knowing of what’s needed for each other kicks in pretty quick.”

“I think we have a lot of hope for the world and ourselves and the desire to create something which will move or touch people,” Cowherd adds. “There’s a spiritual background to the band. We come from a foundation of playing music that is inspirational and I think we all want it to be intellectually interesting, too.”

This year, the SSJO was a joint winner of the TD Discovery Series Special Projects Grant alongside the Socialist Night School, was a featured artist by Sofar Sounds, and has seen the release of their first album, Imagine We’re Sailing, on November 13th 2017, which features special guest artist and esteemed jazz trumpeter, Brian O’Kane.

About Mason Victoria:
As a recipient of the Toronto Duke Ellington Society Scholarship and Dave Stillwell Arranging Award, Mason Victoria is no stranger to the jazz community. From directing and composing for one of the largest big bands in Toronto, the Sonuskapos Jazz Orchestra (SSJO), to arranging and composing for several groups including the Shaw Street Collective, Toronto Jazz Orchestra, UNIVOX choir, New Music Jazz Orchestra, and ensembles at Humber College and the Los Angeles College of Music, Mason continues to inspire his generation. Seven tracks - six originals and the reinterpretation of Juju Wayne Shorter - form The story, the debut of vibraphonist Christian Pomante. The leader, albeit in a relaxed way, he always keeps under control the size of the steps to take: able, thus, to ensure a fluid smoothness to the fifty-four minutes of music, and to adhere to the traditions of jazz.
If certain solutions can lead to the fusion, so the atmosphere triggered by the meeting of guitar and vibraphone, as the softness of the lines selected by Michael Heels on the electric bass, and by Alessandro Rossi on drums, plus a myriad of other possibilities for the quartet. The cohesion of the quartet and the individual quality techniques to release songs with references that are more recognizable and immediate. The quartet was formed by musicians young but already able to express themselves with the relevance and maturity of expression. The compositions have a wide-ranging and are carried out with a step solid and sure: of course, nowadays, it is not easy to propose something completely new, but our attempt to put light on ideas personal or less usual.
If the title of the disc can appear important, bulky, even, the seven tracks reflect a available careful by of the four and have the quality of a musical project that is effective and good prospects.
